Fresh & Frozen Tuna

Maldives tuna fishing is both art and poetry.

From turquoise waters off coral reefs in the Indian Ocean, native fishermen catch our tuna with traditional techniques. Since pole-and-line and handline are the only fishing methods allowed in Maldivian waters, we avoid the indiscriminate bycatches of modern-day nets, which often stretch for miles.

On day trips from sparsely populated atolls, small groups of fishermen use barbless hooks to land tuna lured by baitfish. Manning a fishing boat called a dhoni, the Maldivians forgo rods and reels and instead pull in the tuna by hand.

The fresh tuna are weighed, temperature-tested, and graded. Clarity and good color earn the fish superior grades, while tuna that have not been caught quickly, appearing opaque and pale, are rejected.

Our artisan tuna comes from traceable, sustainable sources. Whether yellowfin, bigeye, or skipjack, our Maldives-caught tuna are exquisite in texture and taste.

All Maldives tuna have entered assessment for certification under the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) standard for sustainable and well-managed fisheries. Blue Circle therefore abides by standards affecting waste recycling, ethical trading, and animal welfare.
